The City of Plymouth's Department of Municipal Services (DMS) offers free battery recycling services to residents and businesses. The green battery recycling drop-off box is located on Church Street, just east of Main Street, near the traffic island across from the Fire Department entrance.
Recycling batteries helps prevent fires and keeps harmful chemicals out of our soil and groundwater. Batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, can spark dangerous fires when crushed or punctured in garbage trucks or recycling equipment.
Never place batteries in your household trash or curbside recycling bin. Instead, follow these simple steps to prepare your batteries for safe recycling.
How to Recycle Your Batteries
1. Sort Your Batteries: Separate batteries by type, including single-use alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C and D), rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion batteries and button batteries.
2. Tape the Terminals: Cover the metal contacts of lithium, rechargeable and button batteries with clear packing tape or electrical tape. This helps prevent accidental contact and reduces the risk of sparks or fires.
3. Bag Your Batteries: Place similar batteries together in clear plastic bags or nonmetal containers. Avoid metal containers, which can create a risk of short circuits.
4. Drop Them Off: Bring your prepared batteries to the green recycling box on Church Street, across from the Fire Department entrance.
Important: Large automotive batteries and damaged, swollen or leaking batteries require special handling and do not belong in the recycling box. Contact DMS for permitted area drop-off locations.
Proper battery disposal helps protect Plymouth's environment, reduces fire hazards and keeps potentially harmful materials out of landfills.
