Key Prevention Highlights
Rodents seek three things: food, water, and shelter. You can immediately reduce risk by focusing on these three areas:
-
Eliminate Food Sources: Always keep garbage in cans with tight-fitting lids. Do not leave pet food, bird seed, or chicken feed outside overnight. The City also reminds residents that ground feeding of animals is prohibited.
-
Block Entry Points: Mice can squeeze into very small openings. Seal cracks or holes larger than 1/4 inch with cement, steel wool, or wire mesh—especially around pipes, eaves, and foundations.
-
Reduce Shelter: Keep your yard clean. Clear away clutter, overgrown shrubs, and debris where rodents could nest. Store firewood and building materials at least 18 inches off the ground.
